The US Supreme Court announced Monday some people with temporary protected status — or TPS — can’t apply for a green card without leaving the country first. This temporary protection from deportation is given to people who can’t return home — be it because of a natural disaster or political unrest. Thousands of TPS holders have been living in the US for decades and have been looking for a path to citizenship.
