US cuts financial aid to Afghanistan

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made an unannounced visit to Afghanistan on Monday to mediate a political settlement between two Afghan political rivals: Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah. The two have been fighting for power since the presidential elections held last year. Pompeo left without a settlement and shortly after announced a $1 billion reduction in US aid to Afghanistan, and potentially another $1 billion in 2021.
