For the first time, the United Nations is commemorating the flight of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees — on the 75th anniversary of the day that’s come to be known in the Arab world as the “Nakba.” The word means catastrophe in Arabic, and it refers to the creation of the modern state of Israel in 1948. US officials stayed away from today’s events at the UN headquarters in New York, while Israel’s UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan called the commemoration, “a blatant attempt to distort history.” Host Marco Werman has the story.
