UN, EU alarmed by police violence in Colombia protests

The European Union and the United Nations are expressing concern over police violence against protesters in the Colombian city of Cali, where officers have killed and injured several protesters this week. Videos on social media have shown groups of police officers physically assaulting and shooting demonstrators at point-blank range. The protests began last week after the now-cancelled proposal in congress to increase taxes to raise $6.7 billion to pay for the country’s debts.
