The UK home secretary, Priti Patel, has come out with a plan that she has called “fair but firm” to overhaul the UK’s asylum system. Advocates have criticized the plan, saying the proposals would create an unfair, dangerous system. Under the changes, people who arrive in the UK by what the government calls illegal means to claim asylum will no longer have the same entitlements as those who arrive through proper channels.
