Matthew Hedges is a 31-year-old British PhD student who was studying security policy in the United Arab Emirates. Today, a court in the UAE convicted Hedges of spying and sentenced him to life in prison. The British government says it is shocked by this verdict, and it’s warning the UAE of “serious diplomatic consequences.” The BBC’s Paul Adams has an update.
