Hurricanes are expected to intensify more rapidly in a warming climate, and there’s a lot of evidence that this is already happening. Hurricane Ian, for example, intensified from 80-mile-per-hour winds to 125-miles-per-hour in less than 24 hours. This poses problems for forecasters and emergency managers, because it gives less time for them to get the message out about evacuations. And it’s caused both to rethink their hurricane playbooks.
