The recent unrest in West Papua has historical roots

Indonesia’s West Papua region erupted in violence again last week when clashes between locals and Indonesian security forces broke out, ending with the deaths of at least nine people. This was the latest in a long history of unrest in the region, which is controlled by Indonesia but populated by people who are ethnically distinct from the rest of the country.
