The problem with ‘squaw’

The World

Ever since George Floyd’s killing this summer, there’s been a movement to correct historical injustices, such as removing the remaining Confederate statues in the US. But there are also clashes throughout North America around an often used word that many don’t know is a racial slur: squaw. Some of the Indigenous women across the US and Canada who’ve been fighting to remove the word from place names have gotten a sudden burst of support, while others have faced challenges.
