For decades under the dictatorship of Omar al-Bashir, the school curriculum in Sudan was infused with Islamist ideology. The new government in Sudan set out to change that and it put Omar al-Garrai in charge of that effort. He sought to “de-Islamicize” Sudan’s school curriculum. But this turned out to be a real challenge. Conservative Muslims took issue with some of the changes Garrai was implementing, and he’s since become a hated figure by many Sudanese. The World’s Halima Gikandi reports from Khartoum about the intense debate over the future of the country’s school curriculum.
