The ‘Blue Map’ monitors pollution in China and gives power to the people

The World

Booming economic growth in China over the last decades has been accompanied by massive levels of air and water pollution as well as the world’s top spot for greenhouse gas emissions. Last year, President Xi Jinping pledged to reach peak emissions by 2030 and be carbon neutral by 2060. Helping China reach this ambitious goal is environmentalist Ma Jun, who created an app called “The Blue Map.” Downloaded by millions of people, the app monitors environmental pollution to hold big corporations and small factories accountable. On this week’s The Big Fix, Ma Jun joins host Marco Werman to talk about the project.
