Earlier this month, two unusual facilities opened in New York City: spaces where people can consume illicit drugs under supervision, without fear of arrest. Local officials have backed efforts amid a record surge in overdose deaths. It makes New York the first place in the United States to operate sanctioned facilities. The approach is very controversial and has faced a lot of backlash in communities. But as The World’s Elana Gordon reports, these sites have been in operation around the world for decades, and offer some key lessons.
