Stingray pregnant with pups — without mating

The World

At an aquarium in North Carolina, a round stingray named Charlotte is pregnant with as many as four pups; this despite her having been isolated for eight years with no opportunity to mate. Host Marco Werman speaks with Dr. Kady Lyons, a research scientist at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, about stingrays and the process of parthenogenesis: a type of asexual reproduction in which offspring develop from unfertilized eggs.
