Spanish court says a pet dog is more than property

A court in Madrid has ruled that a couple, now separated, will have joint custody — of their dog. The ruling recognized the people not as  “co-owners” of the pet, but as “co-carers.” The dog, named Panda, will alternate between the partners’ homes. Host Marco Werman speaks with David Favre, who teaches property and animal law at Michigan State University and helped to draft the International Convention for the Protection of Animals.
