South African heritage agency in dispute with Nelson Mandela’s daughter over auction of late leader’s belongings

The World

The South African government said on Friday that it would continue its attempt to stop items that once belonged to Nelson Mandela from being sold by members of his family, namely his eldest daughter. While she says the sale of the 75 items, which include Mandela’s hearing aids and gifts from world leaders, will fund a memorial garden in her father’s honor, the government wants the items to be kept in South Africa as pieces of national heritage. The World’s host Carol Hills learned more from Bernadette Wicks, a South African journalist based in Johannesburg.
