On Tuesday, the self-proclaimed state of Somaliland celebrates 30 years of independence. The country “broke away” from Somalia 30 years ago, but few nations officially recognize its independence. Still, that hasn’t stopped Somaliland from striving to differentiate itself as a stable and more democratic alternative to neighboring Somalia.
