Shell oil agrees to pay $16 million to Nigerian communities affected by oil spills

The World

The multinational oil company Shell will pay around $16 million to four Nigerian farmers and their communities in compensation for pollution from leaking oil pipelines. The settlement was agreed to after more than a decade of lawsuits and legal battles. It follows a decision handed down in a British court last year that Shell is responsible for damages caused by its branch in Nigeria. The World’s Marco Werman discusses the historic settlement with Nnimmo Bassey, an environmental advocate in Benin City in Nigeria.
