Seattle becomes first US city to outlaw caste discrimination

The Seattle City Council voted on Tuesday to ban caste-based discrimination, a first for an American city. One of its primary aims is to address discrimination in the tech sector by dominant caste South Asians against Dalits and other so-called lower caste groups. The measure was introduced by a South Asian immigrant member of the city council and opposed by the Hindu American Foundation. Marco Werman speaks with Yashica Dutt, author of the memoir: “Coming Out as Dalit.”
