Russia and Ukraine share a complex, tangled history

Ukrainians have been victims of Russian imperialism and Soviet aggression. At the same time, they’ve played a central role in the creation of modern-day Russia. Faith Hillis, a professor of Russian History at the University of Chicago, traces the countries’ shared roots back to the 9th century. Hillis and The World’s Marco Werman discuss why knowing that history can help illuminate a path out of the current crisis.
