Russia and Ukraine share a complex, tangled history

Ukrainians have been victims of Russian imperialism and Soviet aggression. At the same time, they’ve played a central role in the creation of modern-day Russia. Faith Hillis, a professor of Russian History at the University of Chicago, traces the countries’ shared roots back to the 9th century.
