Japan’s prime minister, Fumio Kishida, told Japanese lawmakers Monday that their country is “on the brink of not being able to maintain social functions” due to the falling birth rate. Host Marco Werman speaks with Leonard Schoppa, a professor of politics at the University of Virginia, about Japan’s shrinking population, what factors have led to its demographic crisis, and the steps being proposed to reverse Japan’s population contraction.
