Reclaiming downtown Beirut

The World

Downtown Beirut has been the scene of protests over the past few weeks. That area of the city has been rebuilt since the 1990s. Modern shopping malls have replaced what was once a thriving residential neighborhood. The protesters have occupied two abandoned places in the old downtown — a theater and a cinema. They have been the site of college lectures and open mics. From the podcast, “Kerning Cultures,” Alex Atack takes us there.
