The number of Haitians migrating by sea is far less than the thousands who traveled by land to the US-Mexico border in September. But there’s a clear rise, as reasons build for Haitians to migrate, ranging from growing violence to extreme poverty and the aftermath of a deadly earthquake in August. The World’s Monica Campbell travels to a remote town, Pestel, in Haiti’s southern peninsula, where more people are gravitating toward taking to the sea in rickety boats, bound for foreign soil.
