Preserved body on display at university student center

The World

The preserved body of philosopher Jeremy Bentham has been moved to University College London’s student center displayed in a glass box to be seen upon entry. Bentham, who is credited with developing the doctrine of utilitarianism, died in 1832, and he had specific instructions for how his body was to be handled. Critics of UCL’s decision to move Bentham into such a public area behind glass walls say this is not what the late philosopher meant. The World’s Marco Werman speaks with professor Philip Schofield, the director of the Bentham Project at University College London.
