Organizations prepare as Biden increases refugee cap

President Joe Biden formally increased refugee admissions to 62,500 this week, with the goal of admitting 125,000 refugees in the next fiscal year. This comes after a months-long delay that resulted in canceled flights for people hoping to be resettled in the US, often to reunite with loved ones. The change begins a return for the US in accepting refugees after the Trump administration continuously cut the program, leaving the cap at 15,000 in its last year. The World’s Marco Werman speaks with Hans Van de Weerd — he’s the Vice President of resettlement, asylum and integration with the International Rescue Committee — about what refugee and resettlement organizations will need, to prepare for in the next few months.
