Across Canada, the use of birth alerts has been debated for years. They are issued when a social worker thinks an expecting parent may put their newborn at risk, and the alerts sometimes lead to the newborn being taken away without the parent’s consent. It’s a practice meant to protect kids, but advocates have long argued it disproportionately affects Indigenous communities. The World’s Bianca Hillier reports.
