A new Trump administration policy announced on Wednesday makes it possible for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to quickly deport certain undocumented immigrants without a court hearing. The policy applies nationwide. Before, authorities were only allowed to use expedited removal on immigrants apprehended within 100 miles of an international border who failed to demonstrate they had entered the country legally and had been in the US for at least two weeks. Marco Werman speaks with Anand Balakrishnan, a staff attorney at the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, about the impact and timing of this policy change.
