New citizenship registry in India sows fear among Assam’s ethnic minorities

In August, about two million people in Assam, a state of India, were stripped of their citizenship as India released a National Register of Citizens. India says the registry is needed to identify “illegal” Bangladeshi migrants. But it also sparked criticism of “witch hunts” against Assam’s ethnic minorities, some of whom have lived there for decades. Gergory Stanton of Genocide Watch talks with The World’s Marco Werman about why the policy in Assam raises so many concerns for him.
