In Myanmar, where a military junta has been in charge since early 2021, two pro-democracy activists have become household names. Phyo Zeya Thaw and Ko Jimmy have led protest marches. They’ve been befriended by American ambassadors. One even held a seat in parliament. But that was before the military seized power, forcing elected leaders into hiding. Now, both of the pro-democracy activists have been sentenced to death — by hanging. The sentence has shocked citizens of Myanmar and brought global condemnation. The World’s Southeast Asia correspondent Patrick Winn is following the story.
