In Greece, ‘smart policing’ project will equip some officers with facial recognition devices

Some police officers in Greece will soon be equipped with portable devices that will be capable of facial recognition and fingerprint identification. The rollout is part of a “smart policing” project aimed, in part, at identifying third-country nationals who are in Greece illegally. Greek authorities say the technology will make police checks more efficient, but critics are sounding the alarm about potential abuses. The World’s Lydia Emmanouilidou reports from Athens.
