In Brazil, the president sends a strong message to social media companies

Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsanaro, has a message for social media companies: Keep your hands off our posts. Bolsonaro is temporarily banning a number of platforms from taking down content, even if it violates company rules, which means disinformation would remain online that could help Bolsonaro’s political fortunes: he is running for reelection next year. Yet social media platforms can be notoriously tricky to moderate. We speak about this with Eva Galperin, the director of cybersecurity at the California-based Electronic Frontier Foundation.
