Human rights complaint tries to bar Kentucky Derby billionaire – and his horse – from Saturday’s race

The World

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the billionaire ruler of Dubai, is deeply invested in the horse-racing business in Kentucky. One of his horses, Essential Quality, is favored to win this year’s Kentucky Derby on Saturday. But human rights lawyers have filed a complaint to the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to bar the Sheikh and his horse from the Derby.  The Sheikh is accused of kidnapping two of his adult daughters and forcibly returning them to Dubai, after they attempted to flee on different occasions. Marco Werman speaks to one of the lawyers who wrote the complaint, Sam Marcosson, a professor of law at the University of Louisville’s Brandeis School of Law.
