How Aboriginal activism 50 years ago turned an Australian national holiday into Invasion Day

The World

Jan. 26 is officially Australia Day but to Indigenous communities there, it’s better known as Invasion Day. Fifty years ago on Australia Day, activists erected an Aboriginal Embassy in a tent opposite Australia’s Parliament building in Canberra to illustrate their lack of recognition or agency by the Australian government. It grew into a national and even international event and a turning point for Indigenous activism. Marco Werman speaks with Gary Foley, an Aboriginal Gumbainggird who helped organize the 1972 protest.
