Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is experiencing its third major bleaching event in the last five years. Bleaching is when coral loses its bright color and can result in reef death. Scientists say the bleaching is partly because of warming oceans and climate change. For this week’s installment of The Big Fix, the World’s climate solutions segment, Australian reef ecologist Joshua Cinner speaks to Marco Werman about solutions for the world’s reefs. Cinner is a research fellow at the ARC Centre for Excellence in Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University in Townsville, Australia. In his research, Cinner looks for “bright spots” — reefs that are doing better than expected — to glean lessons for the rest of the world.
