Fukushima evacuee who never returned

The World

Today marks the nine-year anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. On March 11, 2011, an earthquake and tsunami in northeast Japan killed more than 18,000 people and led to the meltdown at the region’s nuclear power plant. The nuclear disaster sent around 160,000 people fleeing from the region, and many never came back. Mitsuko Sonoda, a former resident of Fukushima, tells her story about the terror of that day and what came next for her family.
