Filmmaker Waad al-Kateab filmed her own life in Aleppo continuously for five years, in which she fell in love, married a doctor, gave birth, and survived the months-long siege, air strikes and snipers while living in an upper floor of the last hospital in the city. The result is, “For Sama,” a film that captures the personal details of life in the besieged city of 300,000 people. It’s also a love letter to her baby daughter. Kateab and her husband, Hamza, tell host Marco Werman why they stayed in Aleppo, and what they hope their daughter, now two years old, will one day understand about their ordeal and survival in the Syrian conflict.
