Fire on Easter Island leaves iconic statues damaged

The World

The iconic Moai statues of Easter Island were left damaged following a fire in Rapa Nui National Park. The island territory has about a thousand of these giant head statues and, in addition to being iconic, they’re culturally significant to the local population. The World’s host Carol Hills spoke with Terry L. Hunt, a professor of anthropology at the University of Arizona, about the origins of the statues and what can be done to protect them.
