EU adopts sanctions law styled after US Magnitsky Act

It’s been more than 10 years since Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky died in a Moscow detention center. Magnitsky was imprisoned after accusing Russian government officials of corruption and theft. Since his death, American-born financier Bill Browder has advocated for sanctions against corrupt or criminal government officials in Russian and beyond. The US, Canada and UK, among other countries, have already passed versions of laws named after Magnitsky. Now, the EU has approved its own human rights sanctions law styled after the Magnitsky Act.
