COVID surge throughout Europe

The World

The World Health Organization says Europe is the one region in the world where COVID-19 cases are on the rise. The WHO estimates a 10% weekly increase in infections there since the beginning of November. Russia and Eastern Europe are among the hardest hit, with lower vaccination rates and higher numbers of hospitalizations and deaths. But most of Western Europe is experiencing a rapid climb in cases. Many countries removed mitigation measures, such as mandated mask use and other social-distancing measures, but are quickly putting some restrictions back in place. Host Marco Werman talks with Dr. Eric Topol, executive vice president of Scripps Research, who warns that the US, with its lower vaccination rates than most of Europe, will likely experience another surge soon.
