Climate change is fueling more destructive natural disasters. Developing nations say they need financial help to rebuild after storms, or move people off of unlivable land. Richer nations, like the US and EU, are the most responsible for a warming climate, but have resisted contributing to a specific fund for “loss and damage,” as it’s called in the UN. This topic has been discussed at UN climate meetings for decades, and the need is growing more and more urgent. Developing nations are pushing at a series of meetings this summer for an official item on funding for losses and damages to be put on the agenda of this fall’s UN climate summit, in what could become a make-or-break issue.
