A former senior Canadian diplomat has been detained in China. Michael Kovrig has not been formally charged, but state-backed media in Beijing say his detention is in connection to national security. His friends say the arrest could be a response to Canada’s arrest of a Chinese executive, Meng Wanzhou, of the Huawei telecommunications giant.
