China detains a former senior Canadian diplomat

The World

A former senior Canadian diplomat has been detained in China. Michael Kovrig has not been formally charged, but state-backed media in Beijing say his detention is in connection to national security. His friends say the arrest could be a response to Canada’s arrest of a Chinese executive, Meng Wanzhou, of the Huawei telecommunications giant. Host Carol Hills speaks with Kovrig’s friend, reporter Joanna Chiu with the Toronto Star.*UPDATED: A previous version of this post incorrectly named Michael Kovrig. We regret the error.
