This week, France has repatriated 10 children of French jihadis who have been languishing at the al-Hol detention camp in northeast Syria. Some were orphans, but others were relinquished by mothers who worried about their children’s future. But thousands of youngsters remain in the camp. Amarnath Amarasingam teaches at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, and has visited al-Hol Camp.
