Cherokee constitution strikes language claiming citizenship ‘by blood’

A recent decision by the Cherokee Supreme Court to remove the words “by blood” from its constitution clarifies who can be a citizen of the Nation. Allison Herrera reports that this includes Black members taken into the tribe more than 100 years ago, and allowed freedmen to run for office.
