Central Europe’s deadly pandemic mistakes

The World

They’re known as the Visegrád Four. It’s a cultural and political alliance of four countries in Central Europe: Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. But that’s not all they have in common. When the pandemic first hit Europe in March last year, these four countries escaped the worst of it. But then the second wave hit in October 2020. By the time the third wave hit the continent earlier this year, these four nations had the worst infection rates in Europe. And some of the highest death rates per capita in the World. The World’s Europe correspondent Orla Barry reports on what went wrong.
