The US Census Bureau, by law, has to keep people’s personal information private — including the information of undocumented immigrants who might respond to a question about their citizenship. But protecting that privacy is getting harder as technology improves. So, the US will become the first country to use something called differential privacy. Only problem is, it may not protect from leaks within the federal government.
