California had a 70-year eugenics campaign. Now, survivors in this Mexican American community are getting reparations.

This week, the California Legislature approved reparations for women sterilized without their consent — many were Mexican American women. Now, they’re well into their 90s. The catch? Only those still alive are able to get those reparations, not living family members. In California for example, an estimated 455 survivors are still around.
