Brazil has become one of the global epicenters of the pandemic, recently surpassing China in the number of reported cases. President Jair Bolsonaro has been notoriously dismissive of the virus, saying earlier this week the number of deaths was declining, when in fact it was increasing. Governors and mayors have been struggling to contain the virus. In Manaus, a city of 2 million along the Amazon River and the heart of the country’s struggle, local officials are digging mass graves for the dozens who have been dying every day.
