Sad news from the world of film this week. Melvin Van Peebles, the pioneering Black filmmaker, died on Tuesday at the age of 89 at his home in New York. He was known as the “godfather of modern Black cinema.” Van Peebles inspired filmmakers from around the world with his themes of resistance and Black liberation. The World’s host Marco Werman speaks about his legacy with Racquel Gates who is a professor of film at Columbia University. Gates worked on The Criterion Collection box set of Van Peebles’ work being released next week.
