Australian diplomats said they were appalled by the suspended death sentence given to China-born Yang Hengjun. Yang, a spy thriller novelist and pro-democracy blogger, was arrested during a visit to China in 2019. Despite condemnation by Australia’s top leadership, a reprieve seems unlikely.
