‘Amor Eterno’ music note

The World

Recent video shows a young woman in El Paso singing the classic song “Amor Eterno” not far from the Walmart where the shooting happened on Saturday. As she sang, she was surrounded by signs like “El Paso Strong” and “Forever 9-1-5” — the area code for El Paso. Hers is only one rendition of “Amor Eterno” being sung right now in El Paso. “Amor Eterno” was made a hit by the late great Mexican crooner Juan Gabriel. He was a favorite son of the border — a native of Ciudad Juárez where there’s a huge mural of him. Gabriel’s song is often played or performed at funerals and memorials. Marco Werman tells us more.
