Fires in the Brazilian Amazon were at their worst in a decade last month. That’s according to Reuters, citing data from Brazil’s space research agency, which monitors wildfires via satellite. Michelle Kalamandeen, an expert on deforestation at the University of Cambridge, says more than 5,000 square miles of the Brazilian Amazon burned in the first seven months of 2020. These fires are used to clear land for farming, grazing or mining.
